I talked to a megayacht captain last week about a law that would let yachts stay in Florida after paying a few thousand dollars in sales tax. It didn't take a minute for him to get excited about the possibility.

"Where do I send the check?" he said.

It got me thinking. How many megayacht captains and owners consider Florida their base? And how many of them have to leave every few months because they haven't paid the state's sales tax on their vessels?

PlanetSolar, a multi-hulled solar vessel, powered by 500 square metres of photovoltaic solar panels was unveiled in Kiel, Germany in February. It is 31m long and 15m wide, the craft is expected to be the world’s largest solar boat. It is said to be able to capture 103.4 kW of solar energy to drive its engine for an average speed of eight knots (15kph or 9mph). For information visit www.planetsolar.org

We have a new player in the ever-increasing field of international standards for yacht safety. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) joins the likes of the United Kingdom, the Marshall Islands, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Malta, and Belize with the introduction of its “Yacht Regulations for Yachts above 24 meters.”

With retractable wings, a float plane by Glasair Aviation fits on the sundeck of the 92-foot series of megayachts by Tricon Marine. (The builder's 100-foot model will be able to handle a helicopter.) The yacht's davit isn't big enough to move the plane, so an external crane is required.

RJC Yacht has added M/Y Cocoa Bean, a 142-foot Broward, to its central listings, marking the first time the 10-year-old yacht will be shown for sale, according to a news release.

EU Court: Island luxury tax illegalThe luxury tax that the Italian island of Sardinia imposed on visiting yachts and aircraft in 2006 has been ruled unfair in the European Court of Justice, according to news reports.An Italian court requested an opinion on the tax’s legality from the European Union after the local marine industry objected that the tax unfairly gave Italian vessels an economic advantage over fellow EU-registered vessels.

The number of megayachts in the St. Thomas Fall Yacht Show in November tripled this year over last. While the three megayachts in attendance  – versus one last year – have a while to go before stealing the thunder from Antigua, St. Maarten or Ft. Lauderdale, show organizers have big plans. M/Y Insatiable, a 100-foot Broward brokered by Camper & Nicholsons, was one of the megayachts on show.

A new owner is repositioning the old South Chesapeake Marina and Yacht Yard to attract megayachts. Now known as the South Chesapeake Megayacht Center in Cape Charles, Va., the marina has 450 feet of linear docks and a 150-ton lift, with plans to upgrade to a 300-ton lift, said Mike Ladas, owner of Bluewater Group, which bought the yard in 2006.
