Commodore of Cuba's Marina Hemingway to speak tonight, Feb. 11

 

José Miguel Diaz Escrich, commodore of Marina Hemingway in Havana, will speak about yachting in his country at an event tonight at 5:30 at the Eden Roc in Miami Beach. Invited by the International SeaKeepers Society and the International Superyacht Society, the talk is designed to begin a discussion about Cuba's natural resources and how to protect them once U.S. travel opens to the island.

USCG to hold exercises in the Florida Keys this week

The homeland security exercise will take place tomorrow (Feb. 10) and is based on the Area Maritime Security Training and Exercise Program (AMSTEP). The AMSTEP is focused on building relationships within the Federal Maritime Security domain to write, review and update the Area Maritime Security Plan in addition to supporting other transportation entities that rely upon the port being secure. As the Federal Maritime Security Coordinator, the Coast Guard has the lead in coordinating such exercises.

Groups feast on alphabet soup

Acronyms seem to be on every other logo at the Ft. Lauderdale International Boat Show. Take for example ISS, HISWA, MIASF, SYBAss, USSA and UFO (well, you get the idea). Why do yachts need so many organizations touting support for the industry? The International Superyacht Society addressed the reason for the alphabet soup of groups at its annual membership meeting yesterday at Bahia Mar.
