No matter the far corner of the world in which I may be traveling, when I say I live in Victoria, British Columbia, fellow travelers invariably smile knowingly, "Ah yes, Butchart Gardens and afternoon tea at the Empress Hotel. Victoria is so British!"

Bimini battered sail boat‏

For those who know the cut over the bank to Bimini you might recognize this. Yes, the one where they did not replace the missing bouys that were there last year. This poor 50-footer got pushed/blown out of the cut on Wednesday , March 10 shortly after 2 p.m. under heavy seas. She was entering for the first time, with the quarentine flag and courtesy flag up.

New dock planned: Duncan Town, Bahamas

Plans were announced for construction of a dock and reconstruction of roads in Duncan Town, Ragged Island, Bahamas. A $9.2 million contract was signed in November, according to www.thebahamasweekly.com. Along with the dock, the contract includes the construction of a pier with ramp and a breakwater structure. The projects are being co-financed by the Government of the Bahamas and the 9th European Development Fund and are expected to be completed within 12 months.

Royal Huisman’s Ethereal gets zero-carbon-footprint status twice

The carbon footprint of the 58m (190-foot) Ethereal from the Royal Huisman yard has become zero by using carbon offsets supplied by The CarbonNeutral Company. Ethereal’s carbon footprint for 2009 has been offset through the Tieling coal mine methane project in China, which captures coal mine methane and uses it as an energy source to supply gas to homes and local industry. 

Its 2010 footprint will be offset through The CarbonNeutral Company’s OneNature portfolio, made up of 100 percent renewable energy projects.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) joins the likes of the United Kingdom, the Marshall Islands, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Malta, and Belize with the introduction of its “Yacht Regulations for Yachts above 24 meters.”

Surrendering in Thailand

Just had my third Thai massage. Ahhh. And ouch. My first one was in Phuket, after those sweltering days on the boat, finding nirvana in an air conditioned room and “spa” right downstairs. I looked at the menu of options and chose “traditional Thai massage,” mostly for the experience but also because the “oil massage” was noted as being “distressing” and I didn't need that. (That wouldn't be the first time the English translation was butchered.)

Camera remotes and timers vital

Welcome aboard photo enthusiasts. This is the 12th edition in a series of columns clarifying the list of camera specifications, using the randomly chosen Lumix DMC-FX150 camera, manufactured by Panasonic, as an example. 

Believe me, I had planned on this topic to cover two, possibly three articles, not 12. Nevertheless, the duration and space has not been wasted. Do note, this example Panasonic camera is now out of date. If you are in the market for a new camera, there are many great cameras to choose from.

Increase upper body strength

 

This workout is designed to focus on your upper body- biceps, triceps, shoulders, chest and back. Select two sets of dumbbells; moderate weight and a few pounds heavier. Start with the lighter of the two sets working to complete between 12-15 repetitions of each exercise (unless otherwise stated), you can always increase the weight if you feel you can handle more. In between each exercise, jump rope, run in place, do jumping jacks or another form of cardio for one minute. Complete the circuit three times.
