When the Yacht & Brokerage Show wraps up tonight, megayacht crews will be preparing for stints both short and long in South Florida marinas and shipyards, mostly while they await word of a sale.

  • In earlier times, what did the phrase "all standing" mean? A ship was fully equipped and ready for sea; a ceremony on deck; no liberty while in port.
  • "To dress a ship" means: to hoist her flags; to hoist her sails; to remover her bonnet; to inspect her crew.
  • "To drown the miller" means: lower the anchor; add water to your rum ration, use the head, drink too much?
  • On a nautical chart, the abbreviation "Hr." stands for?
  • Give the term meaning excellent condition, derived from an important English seaport.

These are anything but normal times, so it should come as no surprise that this year's Yacht & Brokerage Show in Miami Beach this past week has been anything but normal. Perhaps fewer people, decidedly fewer boats, curiously different accents and certainly colder than desired, the show still delivered what captains and brokers called serious buyers.

Today is St. Valentine's Day, a day to celebrate love and affection among lovers (or wanna-be lovers). Relationships are just one of the many challenges the yachting industry presents to seafarers. So we asked megayacht crew at the Yacht & Brokerage Show in Miami Beach if they have a Valentine, and if they do, if that person works on yachts.

With retractable wings, a float plane by Glasair Aviation fits on the sundeck of the 92-foot series of megayachts by Tricon Marine. (The builder's 100-foot model will be able to handle a helicopter.) The yacht's davit isn't big enough to move the plane, so an external crane is required.

Wow, that was some squall that blew through Miami on Friday night. Thankfully though, aside from a few downed signs and such, there was no damage to megayachts or exhibitors' booths at the Yacht & Brokerage Show.

  • What masthead light pattern does a dredge show?

When yachties are fortunate to have a pet onboard, usually it's a dog or a cat. We've heard of birds and reptiles, even. But a monkey? One megayacht in the Yacht & Brokerage Show in Miami Beach has one. His name is Ti-Ti and he's a 2-year-old jeffries tamarin species, small and squirrel-like, but cute nonetheless.

With a sprinkling of networking events, parties and booths to explore during the boats shows this week in Miami, we were curious to know "Are crew able to get off the boat to attend them?"

About 6:30 last night, the cold front finally made a tremendous entrance into Miami. A sudden squall with winds appearing near hurricane strength made the rain blow sideways as lightning filled the skies. Planters and signs at the Yacht & Brokerage Show in Miami Beach were toppled as far as I could see, though it was unclear at press time if any yachts or displays suffered damage.

Captains, crew and industry professionals were moving as fast as the approaching rainstorm during last night's Speed Networking event hosted by Crew Unlimited at Yacht & Brokerage Show in Miami Beach.

  • A seaman's name for a reef knot tied upside down is called what? Square knot; slip knot; rogue knot.
  • A tide that has two equal daily highwaters and two equal daily lowwaters is known as what?

The 21st Winter Olympic Games begin today in Vancouver, so we asked crew, "Who are you rooting for?" Most of the crew we spoke to at the Yacht & Brokerage show were rooting for their home team, and with so many Americans working the show, the Red, White and Blue was the run-away favorite.

Q. The Papa flag means which: I am stopped, Keep clear, I am dragging anchor, I am about to sail?

Q. A boat in your danger zone, from dead ahead to two points abaft the starboard beam, is usually which: Give way vessel, privileged vessel, burdened vessel?

The Yacht & Brokerage Show in Miami Beach opened to sunny skies but brisk temperatures yesterday. Hovering near 40 F (5 C), the cold morning was evident by steamy exhaust from generators, bundled crew members moving not-too-fast, and many mugs of coffee wrapped by cold fingers.

It was the day before the Yacht & Brokerage Show and like most pre-opening days, the docks and yachts were strewn with power cables, remnants of carpet, and rolls and rolls of tape. Every day during the show, the Triton team will be on the docks asking a Question of the Day. Today, that question is: How many boat shows have you been in this past year?
