I need help from captains and crew.

You have to know the Hannons to understand the smile on their faces as they were rescued at sea after the 56-foot Carver they were delivering caught fire. No matter what, they are all about laughter. So it was no surprise for us to see them smiling on television, laughing about their experience, making jokes about the rescue efforts. It doesn't make them less professional, despite what television reporters and bloggers say. It's what makes them our friends.

Plastic is an interesting thing. We package almost everything in it these days: chicken from the store, water to take away, even single-serving fuel in Thailand. I have read and heard in the news lately that there is an area in the Pacific Ocean the size of Texas that is full of plastic, all of it about 2-inch squares. That troubles me. Then I turn around and order another bottle of water.

Exiting each temple for our awaiting tuk-tuk, we were approached by children. Charming, tidy children selling things. I had read that it wasn't good to buy goods from children outside tourist areas because many of these children were orphans or homeless, working for unseen adults. Paying for their wares only encouraged the grown ups to take advantage of them.

It has been an interesting few days, actually about 24 hours, since yesterday morning when we were in Bangkok headed for the over-ground trip to Angkor Wat (in Siem Reap, Cambodia). You read lots about the experience for this adventure. Visa scams, fake Cambodian visas, and then the bus/taxi ride from the boarder town to Siem Reap.

We went to the Tiger Temple yesterday. Our friend on Ocelot, Sue, first mentioned it. It sounded like a rehabilitation place for the giant cats. And if we arrived late in the day, she said, we would be able to walk with them for their evening meal and exercise.

Just had my third Thai massage. Ahhh. And ouch. My first one was in Phuket, after those sweltering days on the boat, finding nirvana in an air conditioned room and “spa” right downstairs. I looked at the menu of options and chose “traditional Thai massage,” mostly for the experience but also because the “oil massage” was noted as being “distressing” and I didn't need that. (That wouldn't be the first time the English translation was butchered.)

Here we are after about a week in Luang Prabang and I could not put a finger on what I found so enjoyable about this location. After all, the sun has only broken through the smoked-filled skies once.

We're in Luang Prabang, the former capital city of Laos and the country's second largest town after the capital of Vientiane. That amazes me since it took the most excruciating 10-hour bus ride to get here. Much of the town centers around tourism, but still, it's lovely.
